comic

Author's Note: I like the idea of getting a feel for what kind of world Melissa lives in, but the layout and illustration of this strip are both way too busy. Melissa works at a library, she performs classical music (she's a cellist), she takes photos....she does not usually hang out at loud, busy, thumpy, confusing dance clubs.

This was actually part of our crossover for the end of the fall semester; at that time, every strip on the two-page comics spread in the Pointer was written and illustrated by local artists. We all got together and planned for all our characters to be at the Metro at the same time, living out whatever storylines they were going through. I drew Ada into one of the other strips, and that strip's main character makes a cameo in the next Jackie's strip. I think the crossover lasted two strips. Nobody got it, but we had fun planning it all out.

Spot the Zappa reference.

Author's Note: Lance has been written out, so don't get too attached to him. I still like Shannon's last line.

The reason I've gotten rid of these characters (Billi, Lance, Carey) is because as I write the stories, I can streamline the writing with fewer characters. Billi is gone because she didn't really add anything to Melissa's characterisation and I never thought of any way she could majorly affect a plot. Lance went away because he also never really did anything big and because there is another "walking libido" in Jackie's Fridge--Jackie's co-worker, Carl. He'll show up in December. Carey never really gets introduced; he's the on-site manager at Hobb's Court, where Jackie and company live. Later on, I introduce one of Melissa's musician friends, Victor. Victor is a more dynamic character than Carey, and he can easily take over the parts I had written for Carey.

This all puts me at about 10 characters, almost half of which you won't meet until next year. And I haven't even drawn some of them yet!
