comic

Author's Note: The long-awaited introduction of Gin! After working with Joey on her Tonja Steele comic, I got hooked on the idea of a hyper-intelligent little girl (in Tonja Steele, the character's name is Mindy, and she's a holy terror). The Mindy strips are always fun to write, and I wanted to be able to do that in Jackie's Fridge. Since Melissa works in the kids' section at the local library, it's only natural she'd have a few pint-sized admirers.

The idea for the exchange in the last two panels hit me during my commute to work, and I knew I had my introduction vehicle for a cute kid. I spent three days designing Gin, and went for it. The three Gin strips in this little storyline wrote themselves, and they're my favourites from the second series. Gin herself is about 4 or 5, but she has the maturity of a ten year old.

Side note--the first panel here is a real street in Stevens Point. You're on Clark street, looking East. As of this summer, Clark was completely torn up for renovation. The building Melissa's walking past contains (from foreground to background) Wee-Bee CD's, where I used to work, and the Pampered Stamper, where I had a JoBeth rubber stamp made last Christmas. On the corner is a little car-hop diner called Tess' Twist.
