comic

Author's Note: An example of how a new idea gets away from you, the three Bitchin' Kitchen strips were inspired by one of Joey's and my many trips to the local Country Kitchen for breakfast and brainstorming. We come up with a lot of good material there, actually, including most of the Joke Baby strips for Tonja Steele.

I told Joey she should have a couple waitresses conspiring together as Lou and Bippy do here. Joey couldn't figure out how to work it into Tonja Steele, but I really wanted to see it in print and had a good idea of what the first panel should look like. She said go with it.

When we got home, I grabbed the Jesus Clipboard and started scribbling. I came up with the character designs for Bippy (I was looking for an excuse to use that hair style on somebody) and Lou (who is actually Joey, right down to the bored sarcasm) in about an hour and a half. Bippy was supposed to be blonde, but there was too much white in the panel.

Jackie makes a cameo in her own strip; this is the last time you'll see her for a week or so.

Oh...the Jesus Clipboard. I bought it for 39 cents at the local Goodwill store. It's an old formica clipboard that has two Christian stickers on it; one is a cartoony fish from the '70s with the balloony word "Jesus" inside it, and the other is a red and white sticker designed to look like the Coca-Cola logo, which reads, "Jesus Christ: He's the Real Thing". I looped a leather strap into the clip so we could hang it on things. Much of our brainstorming and sketching is done on the Jesus Clipboard. What can I say? It's inspirational.
