I'd rather have never drawn it, if only the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and all those people were still here. I'm no good at tribute strips. I can never think of a fitting image. But I listened to the news unfold, from the first plane striking (when I thought it was simply a horrible accident) through the fourth plane and the collapses, my face went through so many different expressions, and I just couldn't think of what to do with myself. So I drew. When I started drawing the strip, I was so shaken I couldn't even remember the names of my characters, so I divided the panel off into eight segments and wrote names across the top, stopping with Victor, forgetting Melissa and Gin, and deliberately leaving out the Fridge and the Pig (one is an object and the other is a comic animal; neither is appropriate). When I remembered Melissa and Gin, I shuffled the order of the names and drew the figures dressed simply. Brandy was just a blank space until I had almost finished the pencil work--I had just forgotten her. Gin, Caryn and Melissa all had to be reworked for various reasons.
